Experience a Wine Weekend in Lubbock, Texas

Calling all wine lovers, salsa fanatics and peach enthusiasts! Mark your calendars on August 7 for a wine-filled weekend in Lubbock, Texas. As the leading producer of Texas wine, growing over 90% of the state’s grapes, as well as boasting six award-winning wineries, the “Hub City” knows wine! We’ve put together an itinerary with everything you need to do, see and taste while here. This is one weekend you won’t want to miss. 

As you make your way onto the caprock, or fly over the crops, the pioneering spirit of West Texas envelopes guests into an immersive experience showcasing the roots Lubbock natives have sowed, which reap the evolving culture of tradition and growth we experience today. Being a city that has immense pride in its way of life, each new development has been thoughtfully designed, paying tribute to our history down to the finest detail. 

At new properties like the Cotton Court Hotel, Lubbock’s newest boutique hotel designed to replicate a 19th-century cotton gin, each creative element pays homage to Buddy Holly and the city’s robust music scene, as well as the strong cotton and agriculture industry found throughout the area. Room nights begin at $129 per night and the hotel is centrally located downtown. 

Just a few blocks north, the Cultural District brings Lubbock’s culture to life. On the first Friday of every month, which luckily falls today, LHUCA hosts the First Friday Art Trail from 6 to 9 p.m. Local artisans and musicians meet together to showcase their art. Visitors can peruse the local galleries, eat at food trucks and make their way throughout Lubbock’s downtown. This event is free to the public.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the revitalization taking place downtown in the shape of delectable wines and the nation’s top brews. Before you hit the streets and enjoy local art, stop by the recently named no. 1 brewpub in the country, The Brewery LBK, for refreshing and eclectic craft beers. If wine is more your thing, Burklee Hill Vineyards has reimagined the historic Kress Building into a timeless bistro and tasting room. And, might we add, each attraction is within walking distance! 

Start your day off right with a cup of coffee or tea paired with a pastry or breakfast sandwich from one of Lubbock’s many craft coffee houses! Located in Tech Terrace, J&B Coffee is nestled in a quaint shopping center at the center of the historic neighborhood. The menu features house-roasted beans in a variety of roasts and flavors including Irish Cream, Mocha Java and more. We also recommend ordering a croissant sandwich. This is the perfect light option to fuel your morning. 

Before starting your day of wine tasting, a visit to Lubbock is not complete without exploring Texas Tech University’s campus. Whether on foot or on a Lime Scooter, be sure to download the ArtTrek app on your phone for a self guided tour of the Public Art Collection which features art installations from renowned artists and sculptors placed throughout campus. 

At noon, make your way to the Depot Entertainment District and visit McPherson Cellars for the Pups & Picpoul event! What’s better than spending an afternoon at the winery on the patio with your best friend and a glass of Picpoul Blac in hand? Don’t forget to bring your leash and enter through the back gate. McPherson will kindly provide the beverage for your pups and the doggy bags! This event is from noon to 7 p.m.

After spending time at McPherson Cellars with your furry friend, head east to Llano Estacado Winery for an afternoon at the 5th annual Salsa and Sangria festival! From 12 to 5 p.m., guests can enjoy live music, food trucks, a variety of Llano house-made Sangria and take part in the local sala competition! Tickets are $25 and include an all-access pass to unlimited tasting samples of salsa, voting for your favorites and three glasses of Sangria. This event is a will call event, meaning guests won’t receive physical tickets. There will be two check-in stations to receive wristbands at the door.

We hope you’ve packed your sweet tooth after an afternoon of savory and spicy delights! Just south of Llano Estacado Winery, English Newsom Cellars is hosting the Just Peachy Farmers Market from 5 to 8 p.m.! Steve Newsom, owner and winemaker at English Newsom, knows how to grow more than wine grapes. With hundreds of acres of land, he is well versed in growing on the Texas High Plains. With apple and peach orchards, as well as experience with cotton and peanuts, Steve is a seasoned farmer with an eye for product. Nothing pairs together better than a glass of delectable Texas wine and Lubbock’s infamously gorgeous summer weather. Cheers with the 2019 Just Peachy Sangria, a juicy peach infusion that is a fan favorite.

Before making your way back to the Cotton Court, schedule your reservation at La Diosa Cellars, located in the Depot Entertainment District, which features Latin tapas and eclectic decor. Across the street, McPherson Cellars wine graces the wine scene as Kim McPherson, son of Doc McPherson who is considered to be the father of Texas Wine, creates an environment for all at his location inside a historic Coca-Cola bottling plant.

Saturday nights in the “Hub City” are not for the faint of heart. While visiting, Lubbock’s social scene makes its way home with you to the Cotton Court with live music playing in the courtyard. Take a night swim in the heated pool, sit around a fire, or play yard games like cornhole with Texas musicians performing on the patio!
